Getting started

Why choose Navesink Psychological Services?

Navesink Psychological Services provides evidence-based treatment and evaluations, following the research and science on how to best help clients' mental health and performance goals. We approach each case with one objective: for clients to learn and master the skills and strategies to not need us!

With evaluations, we provide comprehensive reports custom-tailored to referral questions - leading to meaningful recommendations instead of boilerplate reports with the same suggestions for every client.

How do I get started?

Complete our contact form, give us a call at 732-784-7793, or email mstrobel@navesinkpsych.com. We return all contact and will get back to you as soon as possible.

How long does it take to get an appointment?

We can usually schedule therapy and counseling clients within 2 weeks. For evaluations, appointments are typically available within 2 months. Reach out and we'll find the soonest availability for you.

Please note: our goal is to match you with the right provider for your specific needs - and sometimes that means a bit of a wait rather than simply booking you with the next available person. We put people before profits.

What ages do you serve?

We provide services for ages 2.5 years old through retirement age.

What conditions and concerns do you treat?

Our diverse team treats a wide range of conditions including anxiety, depression, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), tics and Tourette syndrome, trauma, OCD, young adult transitions, sport and performance concerns, and more.

I'm not sure if my child needs therapy or an evaluation - how do I decide?

Reach out! Dr. Strobel is happy to speak with you about the best course of action and answer any questions. Contact us via our contact form or call 732-784-7793.

How do I know if my child needs therapy? What are the signs?

Ask yourself: is your child struggling in any setting - home, school, sports, or socially? Have you noticed changes in their behavior or emotional regulation that seem different from how they typically present? These can all be signs that some support would help.

There are many indicators and every child is different. The best first step is to reach out for a free consultation and see how the NPS team can help.

Fees & logistics

How is NPS different from an in-network provider or a platform like BetterHelp?

When you work with an in-network provider or a platform like BetterHelp, your care is shaped in part by what your insurance company approves. That means session frequency, treatment length, and even the diagnosis on your record are influenced by a third party whose priority is cost containment, not your wellbeing. At NPS, those decisions belong to you and your clinician - no one else.

Our team holds advanced degrees, specialized certifications, and training in evidence-based treatments that take years to develop. Providers who rely heavily on insurance volume often do so because high caseloads are built into their business model. We intentionally keep our caseloads manageable so every client gets our full attention and the level of care their situation actually calls for - whether that's weekly sessions, an intensive period of treatment, or spacing things out as progress is made.

There is also a privacy consideration most people don't think about. When you use insurance, your diagnosis and treatment history become part of a permanent record that insurers, employers, and others may access. Paying out of pocket keeps that information between you and your provider in almost all cases.

We understand that cost is real, which is why we offer sliding scale fees and provide all the documentation you need to submit for out-of-network reimbursement - many clients recover a significant portion of their fees that way.

The bottom line: we made a deliberate choice to stay out of network so we could put your care first. We think you deserve that.

Do you accept insurance?

We are an out-of-network provider and give you all the documentation you need to submit for insurance reimbursement. We also offer sliding scale fees. Our goal is to provide access to high-quality, evidence-based care to everyone - and not let finances be a barrier to services.

Do you offer telehealth or virtual appointments?

Yes - telehealth is available for all of our services.

Can clients mix in-person and virtual sessions?

Absolutely! Many clients prefer this flexibility and we are happy to accommodate it. You can mix in-person and virtual sessions in whatever combination works best for your schedule and needs.

Can you work with clients outside of New Jersey?

Yes! We have a few team members who are PsyPact participants, which means they can provide telehealth services to clients in any PsyPact member state.

Therapy & counseling

What can I expect in the first therapy session?

The first session involves collecting background information, explaining the therapeutic process, and developing a plan for treatment. The therapist will get to know you, your child, or your family and hear about what concerns are present. At times parents may come in without their child for the first session in order to provide background information candidly.

How long are sessions and how often will we meet?

The first session is typically one hour; follow-up sessions are 45 minutes to one hour. We usually start by meeting weekly or every other week, then reduce frequency as symptoms improve. Our goal is for clients to learn the skills and strategies they need to no longer need us!

Do you work with parents, or just the child?

We believe working with the whole family system is where we can create the most meaningful change. We offer standalone parent coaching, in-home services, and include parents as active participants in their child's treatment. It is how we can be most successful - and it just makes sense!

What should I tell my child before their first therapy appointment?

Explain that they are coming to meet with someone who is going to help them. When children hear "doctor" they often think of a medical physician who may give them a shot - explain that this is a different type of doctor and there will absolutely be no shots. Children are welcome to bring a toy, game, stuffed animal, or other small item from home. There are also toys and games including Legos, stuffed animals, a Nintendo Switch, and art supplies at the office.

What is CBIT and who is it for?

CBIT - Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics - is a gold-standard, evidence-based treatment for tics and Tourette syndrome. Rather than suppressing tics with medication alone, CBIT teaches clients to recognize the urge to tic and respond with a competing behavior, reducing tic frequency and intensity over time. It is effective for children, adolescents, and adults.

We are able to provide CBIT services to clients in any PsyPact state via telehealth. Contact us to get started.

What is SPACE therapy and who is it for?

SPACE - Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions - is a highly effective, evidence-based treatment for children, adolescents, and young adults who struggle with anxiety, OCD, failure to launch, and other anxious behaviors.

What makes SPACE unique is that it works primarily through the parents and caregivers rather than directly with the child. This makes it an excellent option in two situations: when a child or teen is resistant to their own treatment, and as a powerful complement to the work a client is already doing in their own therapy. By changing how caregivers respond to anxious behaviors, SPACE creates meaningful change in the whole family system.

Yes! Dr. Strobel is the Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Health Director for Garden State Esports, and a number of our providers work with esports athletes to help them perform at the top of their game - managing performance anxiety, focus, tilt, team communication, and more.

Do you offer academic tutoring or executive functioning coaching?

We sure do! Our team includes retired teachers, current school providers, and licensed therapists. Clients are matched to the provider with the most expertise for their specific presenting concerns - whether that's reading support, math, writing, organization, time management, or study skills.

Evaluations

What can I expect during an evaluation?

Evaluations have a lot of moving parts, but clients are typically only needed in the office for one day - other components can be completed virtually and asynchronously. Prior to the evaluation, a member of the NPS team will speak with the family about presenting concerns and tailor the assessment accordingly.

On the day of testing, we start by interviewing the client and/or family and discussing how the day will be structured. Breaks are provided throughout. Clients are encouraged to bring snacks and any relevant documentation such as doctor's reports, school records, or prior evaluations. Clients should get a good night's rest, take regular medications, and bring any adaptive devices such as glasses or hearing aids.

How long does an evaluation take, and when do we get results?

Clients are typically only needed in the office for one day, with other parts completed virtually or asynchronously. The feedback session - where we review findings and recommendations with the family - is usually scheduled about one month after testing.

Can you provide evaluations for testing accommodations (SAT, ACT, LSAT, MCAT, and others)?

Yes! We have helped many clients secure testing accommodations for the SAT, ACT, LSAT, MCAT, bar exam, and other standardized and board examinations, as well as classroom and workplace accommodations. Contact us to learn more.

Can you provide evaluations for clients who are out of state?

For most evaluations the client needs to come to our office at least once. However, in some instances we are able to provide a fully remote evaluation. Call us at 732-784-7793 or fill out our contact form for more information.

What should I tell my child before their evaluation?

Explain that they are going to do some activities that will help figure out how they learn best. Avoid the word "tests," which can make children nervous. For older children, you can explain that the activities will help discover what makes school challenging and the results will be used to develop ideas to help them succeed.
